It is an exciting time of year for League as we prepare for our League’s annual dinner on June 13th, the County Convention on May 22nd, and the State Convention the weekend of June 1st-2nd in Albany. We are fortunate to have three excellent League representatives for the State Convention: Alisa Henderson, Peter Rosenthal, and Horty Schmierer.
Please take a moment to find in this issue of the newsletter the proposed budget and slate of officers for Southwest Nassau for 2013-2014 as well as a form to RSVP for the June 13th annual dinner. This year its cost will be $30 and it will be held at McQuades in Lynbrook; John O’Connell, Executive Editor of the Herald Community Newspapers will be our guest speaker along with Samantha (Sammi) Cohen our League’s representative for the Student in Albany Program.
On June 6th at 7pm a moderator training program will be held at Clinton Marvin Park. Moderators are needed for forums for candidates running at the local, state and national and for school board races. It is an awesome opportunity and I hope many will attend this training and be added to the list of those trained to be League moderators. A flyer with all of the details is attached. If you need a ride, give me a call or send me an email.
If you have not already done so, please send in your reservation form for the County Convention on May 22nd. Barbara Bartoletti, our speaker who is the Legislative Director for the League of Women Voters of New York State since 1988, is dynamite and worth every opportunity to hear her speak. There will be several car pools leaving from the Rosenthal’s so that as many from our League can attend. Anyone who needs a ride, just let me know.
On May 28th at the Hewlett Woodmere Library 1pm, we will have a presentation on Sandy and its aftermath and how to be prepared for future storms of this nature. Joe Kolodny with others assistance has put together this program with speakers from Operation Splash, FEMA, and the County Public Works through Howard Kopel’s office. It should be a very interesting and informative discussion—please come and bring family, friends, and acquaintances! Spread the word!
June 3rd will find your Board meeting to discuss our League’s goals for the coming one-three- five years. It will be an opportunity for us to brainstorm our vision for what and how we want our League in the coming years and to then figure out how we will achieve our ambitions. If anyone is interested in more details, again, give me a call.
It is also renew your membership time. In this newsletter you will find a renewal form if you can’t put your hands on the one mailed to you! Your membership is what allows our League and your Board to continue its efforts to make democracy work! Thanks to members asking friends and acquaintances to join League, I would like personally to welcome four new members: Eve Schniebolk, Barry Basso, Tammi Williams, and Bobbi Lish! WELCOME!
If you have made it this far through this message, you can see just how much we are all doing for League! I look forward to seeing many of you in the coming weeks at the many activities we have planned!
