What Is The League of Women Voters?

The League of Women Voters, a nonpartisan political organization, encourages the informed and active participation of citizens in government, registers citizens to vote, works to increase understanding of major public policy issues, and influences public policy through education and advocacy.

The LWV does not support or oppose candidates or political parties. Membership is open to all 18 years or older, and provides the opportunity to be active and involved in local, state and national issues. The League works through the American political process and with the citizens of this country to bring about constructive change. We mobilize citizen action for a better America.

The League of Women Voters of Nassau County is comprised of seven local Leagues: Central Nassau, East Nassau, Great Neck, Greater Five Towns, Greater Westbury, Long Beach, Port Washington-Manhasset.

In addition to the issues pertinent to the County, each local Leagues focuses on issues in their area such as environmental issues (e.g., the Underhill property) and holding local candidate meetings. Our members strive to educate ourselves and the public through meetings during the year covering topics of interest to our citizens. In the recent past we have had speakers on such issues as beach erosion, illegal immigration, and plea bargaining.

The LWVUS and the State and local Leagues study issues and their implications such as alternatives to incarceration and health care reform. The public is cordially invited and urged to attend our General Meetings and Candidate Forums, which are listed on our Calendar. Recently, the local Leagues have had speakers on such issues as land use, pesticides, illegal immigration, and domestic violence.
